Real Madrid Knocked Out of the King's Cup by Atletico After Extra Time in Eighth-Finals

In a thrilling match in the eighth-finals of the Copa del Rey football tournament, the Madrid derby favored Atletico, who emerged victorious with a 4-2 win after extra time on their Metropolitano home turf against Real, the defending champions. The two teams were tied 2-2 at the end of regular time.

Despite uncertainties, Axel Witsel was ultimately present at the start in the center of Atletico's defense, playing the entire game.

Lino put Atletico in the lead (39th minute, 1-0) before Real equalized just before halftime with an own goal by goalkeeper Oblak (45+1, 1-1). Morata restored the lead for the home team (2-1, 57th minute). Then, Joselu's header, assisted by Bellingham, secured the right to extra time (2-2, 82nd minute). At the 100th minute, Griezmann's personal feat on the right flank culminated in a left-footed shot into a very tight angle, causing the Metropolitano to erupt (3-2). This marked Griezmann's 175th goal for Atletico. Riquelme sealed the score at 4-2 in the 119th minute.

This loss for Real is their first since September 24.

The match took place eight days after Real's 5-3 victory, also after extra time, against Atletico in the semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup played in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Real would then go on to win the trophy by defeating FC Barcelona 4-1 on Sunday.

Last season, Real eliminated Atletico in the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey with a 3-1 victory at Bernabeu.

Earlier in the evening, Barcelona secured a 3-1 victory against Unionistas, a Salamanca-based club in Division 3. Despite trailing 1-0, Barcelona secured their spot in the quarterfinals.
